Gardening Activities for April

After a seemingly endless winter, warmer temperatures are finally upon us, and signs of spring are beginning to emerge. At Van Luyk’s, we’re thrilled to see an explosion of blooming plants, delighting us with their early displays of color. As Easter approaches, we have an extensive selection of flowering plants available, including Easter lilies, hydrangeas, potted mums, tulips, azaleas, and more. April is an excellent time to begin preparing your lawn and garden for the growing season. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Clean pathways and patios to remove any debris that may have accumulated over the winter.
  • Re-seed bare patches of lawn, or overseed your entire lawn to encourage healthy new growth.
  • Apply dormant spray to your fruit trees, roses, shrubs, and ornamentals to control pests and diseases.
  • Plant seed potatoes, onion sets, and garlic cloves.
  • Plant spring bulbs, such as daffodils and tulips, for a colorful display next year.

It’s important to delay cleaning garden areas in the spring, as many pollinators overwinter in the dead material. By leaving this material in place, you can help support local ecosystems and protect bees and butterflies.
